The Hazards of Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy can inadvertently expose surrounding healthy organs to high doses of radiation. This can adversely affect a patients’ quality of life, and may also result in health cause conditions requiring significant interventions or other severe health consequences.
By increasing the gap between tumors and surrounding healthy organs, the BioProtect ProSpace significantly reduce the radiation reaching to the rectal wall and consequently the complications associated with radiation therapy as recently shown by the results of a multi-centre , international study with 24 patients. Furthermore, the BioProtect balloon may enable more efficient treatments by allowing clinicians to radiate at high doses, with fewer treatment sessions, and at a lower cost.
The BioProtect ProSpace is implanted through a simple, minimally invasive, transperineal approach procedure. The proprietary balloon is made from biodegradable polymers, which have an excellent safety record, dissolves and reabsorbs within 3-6 months, eliminating the need for removal.
As radiation therapy is a well-established, effective and widely accepted form of treatment for many types of cancer, the BioProtect technology can be used to design and implement safer and more enhanced radiation therapy for a wide variety of cancers.
